Coaching a Baby to Become an 'English Gentleman' – Does It Justify the Money?

Child education concept
The company responsible for the advert states that what looks like "luxury or peculiarity" is actually "purposeful commitment in initial education".

"A household residing in north London wants to find an remarkable and skilled educator to assist their most junior child on his initial journey to becoming an British gentleman."

Upon seeing this listing, you might naturally miss the wording "initial stages" as simple a turn of phrase.

Yet, it might be the crucial part of this distinctive position posting, as it aims to recruit a teacher for a one-year-old.

Numerous of submissions have already been received since the anonymous family posted their search for the highly paid tutor, who needs to be "an exceptional individual".

In recent few weeks, the post has received notice in the news, with many asking why?

Innovative Idea

The CEO, head and founder of a global tutoring firm, which is supporting the family in their hunt, explained that despite early skepticism, he considered the concept "far sighted", and "advanced".

When he met the family, he noted they recognized the unconventional character of their requirement, and how young their son is.

However, they stated that they "didn't want to wait any longer" to engage a tutor, as they had waited until their elder sibling was five, and by that stage "cultural influence had by then taken hold".

What precisely does the family mean by "cultural bias"?

It's "all-encompassing", the expert responded. "How you eat, how you speak".

He explained the older sibling had adopted "really subtle, unspoken signals" from the family, and had assumed their cultural norms. The family informed Adam they hoped to prevent this pattern to recur with their younger child.

The strategy: To engage a UK tutor, who must speak with Received Pronunciation, to influence the baby from day one.

Tutoring discussion
The tutoring agency claim the post has sparked a broader debate about how parents view learning, advantage and the part of cultural environment in learning.

Natural Absorption

"Much of the education at the outset here is somewhat osmotic," said the CEO.

It's by means of this osmosis that the family are expecting the child will acquire the British traits they wish to instil.

The consultant noted the tutor must be somebody who studied at "the right kinds of schools – similar types of schools as the family plan to send their son to".

"The educator must be the right kind of person, they'll be performing things they aren't even aware they're doing, effortlessly," he commented.

Cost Not Relevant

The family explained to him the chosen tutor should ideally also have familiarity of or interest in horse riding, winter sports, the arts and musical activities so as to inspire the child in a wide range of hobbies.

Additionally though, he explained the family hoped the tutor to enrol the child on a variety of courses so the child would be "pony-riding and picking up an musical instrument by the time they are about three years old".

In the family's perspective, assisting their son develop into a "English gentleman" will bring about accomplishment and provide access.

"For all the rights and wrongs of that, because it's definitely a class statement," he notes.

However, in spite of all this instruction in "English culture", would the child pick up alleged cultural leaning from the globally influenced family he resides with anyway?

"Certainly", said the CEO. "The family understand this might not succeed, but they've just taken the view of, 'we should try and we should start as early as we can', because the cost of it is not a concern," he explained.

Idealistic and Unrealistic

A number of in the education sector who share these concerns.

Peter Cui, chief executive of an educational organization, who provides private tutors, wrote that "the journey of embracing two identities, or indeed, becoming oneself, is something that must be lived into, not manufactured."

He wrote that he had moved from China to the Britain at the time of seven, and had been brought up knowing and practicing dual heritages. He continued to be educated at Cambridge University.

The educator was the pioneer hailing from mainland China to be elected to the role of Finance Head of the university debating society.

"The idea that a single person can act as a living vessel of UK identity, an individual who can possibly impart the characteristics of a UK sophisticate to a 12-month-old child, seems to me optimistic and unrealistic," he wrote.

"Based on my background, having a typically UK tutor from early childhood will will not necessarily create the goal they desire.

"I wasn't provided with that kind of mentor, and yet I have been lucky enough to enjoy numerous of the opportunities they hope for their son."

He added: "The reality is, personal identity cannot be dictated from the outside; it must be selected, and it must come from within."

Purchasing UK Culture

Naturally, UK identity is something the CEO hopes can be taught – and commercialized.

"I believe the fact that the world regards us in this respect is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
