British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels down to the site... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
