Here's a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard biological terror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love one another.
A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The narrative begins when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.
The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.
Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.
Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that arise in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.
Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
